The 1M Coupe: BMW's Happiest Accident

The 1M Coupe should not have existed. It was assembled largely from existing components by a team working with a limited budget, and the result is one of the most beloved cars M has ever produced.

The recipe

The N54 twin-turbo six from the 135i with an overboost function, the rear axle and much of the suspension from the E92 M3, widened arches to accommodate it, and a six-speed manual as the only option.

Why it works

Short wheelbase, wide track, no electronic dampers and no automatic gearbox to hide behind. It is a car with an obvious personality and modest polish, which is precisely the appeal.

The market

740 US cars, 6,309 worldwide. Values dipped briefly below sixty thousand dollars and have since climbed steadily. Valencia Orange carries a premium over Alpine White and Sapphire Black.

What to check

N54 fuel injectors and the high-pressure fuel pump, both known items. Otherwise it is a straightforward car with a strong specialist support network.
