Carbon Ceramic Brakes: Worth It on a Road M Car?

The carbon ceramic option on a modern M car costs roughly as much as a used E36 M3. The question is not whether they work. It is whether you will ever ask them to.

What they do well

Enormous fade resistance under repeated heavy braking, significant unsprung weight reduction, and effectively no brake dust. On track, the difference across a long session is unambiguous.

What they do badly

Cold bite is poor. In wet, cold conditions the first application of the day is noticeably weaker than steel. They also squeal, sometimes loudly, and it is not a fault.

The cost question

Replacement rotors run into five figures. Track use accelerates wear on the disc face itself, not just the pads. If you track the car regularly, the maths eventually favours steel with good pads.

The resale angle

On a modern M car, ceramics add to resale value but rarely recover their original cost. Buy them because you want them, not as an investment.
