Choosing Your First M Car: A Realistic Budget Guide

The mistake almost everyone makes is spending the entire budget on the purchase. An M car's price and an M car's cost are two different numbers, and the gap is largest at the cheap end.

Around twenty thousand

An E39 M5 without records, a high-mileage E46 M3 or an early E90 M3. All three will need immediate work. Hold back at least a quarter of your budget.

Around forty thousand

This is the sweet spot: a sorted E46 M3 with rod bearings done, an E92 with a service history, or an F80 M3 approaching the bottom of its depreciation curve. Buy the documented car over the low-mileage one.

Around eighty thousand

A very good E30 M3, a low-mileage G80, or an M2 CS. At this level condition and provenance drive the price entirely, and a pre-purchase inspection is not optional.

The rule that matters

Buy the car with the thickest folder, not the lowest odometer. Deferred maintenance always costs more than someone else's completed maintenance.
