The Cooling System Job Nobody Regrets
On every M car built before 2010, the cooling system is a maintenance item with an expiry date, not a component that fails at random.

Ask any independent BMW specialist which single preventive job saves the most engines and the answer will be the cooling system, every time.
Why it fails
Plastic components — expansion tank, thermostat housing, radiator end tanks — become brittle after roughly ten years of heat cycling. When they fail, they fail suddenly and completely, usually at speed.
What the job covers
Radiator, water pump, thermostat, expansion tank, cap, all hoses and the fan or fan clutch. Doing half of it is a false economy because the remaining parts are the same age.
Cost versus consequence
Between eight hundred and two thousand dollars depending on the chassis. An overheated aluminium head is a five-figure conversation. Do it on schedule and forget about it for another decade.
