The E46 CSL Market: Rarity Meets Reality

The CSL was always going to be collectible. What is interesting is how completely it has decoupled from the standard E46 M3, which it outperforms by a margin most drivers will never access.

The numbers

1,383 built, all with the SMG gearbox and none officially sold in North America. Values that sat around sixty thousand pounds a decade ago now regularly clear one hundred and thirty, with exceptional cars going considerably further.

What separates examples

Carbon airbox intact and unmodified, original wheels, low owner count and continuous service history. Cars converted to manual gearboxes are a divided market — some buyers pay a premium, the purists discount them.

Ownership notes

Rod bearings apply here as they do to any S54. The thin glass and carbon panels make repairs slow and expensive. Track use is common in the ownership history and is not automatically negative if properly documented.
