The M3 Touring Question: Why It Took Forty Years
BMW built exactly one M5 estate before the G81, and the reasoning behind the gap says a lot about the company.

The M3 Touring arrived in 2022 to an audience that had been asking for it since 1986. The delay was never about engineering.
The precedent
The E34 M5 Touring existed. So did the E61. Both sold in tiny numbers and both are now worth considerably more than the sedans they were based on, which is precisely the problem: enthusiast approval and sales volume are not the same thing.
What changed
The G81 arrived when the wagon body style had recovered enough relevance in Europe, and when M's volume elsewhere could absorb a low-volume halo. It is still not sold in North America.
Is it any good
It is a G80 M3 Competition xDrive with a longer roof and slightly more weight over the rear axle. Which is to say, yes.
