BMW G90 M5 — 2025–present

The G90 M5 is a plug-in hybrid, and that single fact has defined its reception. It makes 717 hp and 738 lb-ft, it can drive on electricity alone for around 25 miles, and it weighs nearly as much as a full-size SUV.

In isolation it is astonishing: silent in EV mode, savage in Sport Plus, and blessed with the traction to deploy everything through M xDrive. The Touring version, sold in Europe and finally in the United States, is the practical enthusiast's answer.

Whether it is an M5 in spirit is the argument that will follow it for a decade. What is not in question is the capability, or the fact that battery-related servicing is now part of M5 ownership.
