BMW Z3 M Roadster

A short-wheelbase roadster with an M engine and no electronic safety net — deeply charismatic, occasionally alarming, and now genuinely collectible.

BMW Z3 M Roadster — 1998–2002

The Z3 M Roadster puts an M3 engine in a small, light, semi-trailing-arm roadster with no stability control. It is a car that demands respect in the wet and rewards commitment in the dry.

North American cars used the 240 hp S52 until 2001, when the 315 hp S54 arrived and turned the car from quick to genuinely fast. European cars ran the S50B32 before making the same S54 switch.

It is the enthusiast's Z3, and the small production numbers — particularly of S54 cars — have pushed values well clear of ordinary Z3 money.

    First-generation M Roadster. US cars 240 hp, Europe 321 hp. Chrome interior trim on later cars.

  • 2001–2002 — S54

    315 hp in the US, 325 hp in Europe. Larger brakes, revised interior with M-specific instrument cluster.

  • Final cars

    Small production run in 2002 before the Z4 replaced the Z3. S54 cars are the ones collectors want.

  • S54 cars carry the same rod bearing requirement as the E46 M3
  • Interior plastics and the soft top age badly
  • Limited luggage space and cabin storage

Known faults and what they cost

  • Rear differential mount / trunk floor tearing$1,500–$3,500

  • Rod bearings (S54 cars)$2,500–$4,000

    Same S54 service item as the E46 M3.

  • Cooling system$900–$1,500

    Radiator, expansion tank and water pump are all age-limited.

  • Soft top wear and rear window$800–$2,000

    Plastic rear windows craze; tops shrink and leak.

Pre-purchase inspection checklist

  • 01Pull the trunk carpet and inspect the differential mounting area for cracks or repairs
  • 02On S54 cars, ask for rod bearing documentation
  • 03Check the soft top operation, sealing and rear window clarity
  • 04Test for VANOS rattle on cold start
  • 05Inspect the subframe and rear suspension mounting points
  • 06Verify M-specific interior trim and instruments are present

Modifications for longevity

  • Diff mount reinforcement

    Preventive reinforcement of the trunk floor is the single best investment.

  • Rod bearings on S54

    Preventive replacement at 60–80k miles.

  • Cooling overhaul

    Full system replacement every 8–10 years.

  • Soft top care

    Clean and protect regularly; store with the top up to avoid creasing.

  • Bushing refresh

    Rear trailing arm and subframe bushings sharpen the car considerably.

Modifications for performance

  1. 01Structural work first

    Reinforce the diff mount before adding power or grip.

  2. 02Tires and suspension

    Modern rubber and quality dampers make the rear far more predictable.

  3. 03Exhaust and tune

    Modest gains and a much better noise from the straight-six.

  4. 04S54 swap for S52 cars

    A known conversion, but check the economics against buying an S54 car outright.

What they are worth

S54 cars trade at a substantial premium over S52 examples. Imola Red and Estoril Blue are the strongest colours.

Documented diff mount reinforcement adds real value. Cars with rust, floor damage or an unknown rod bearing history should be priced accordingly.
