BMW E90 M3 Sedan — 2008–2011

The E90 is the forgotten member of the V8 M3 family and, for a lot of owners, the smart one. It carries the same S65 V8, the same suspension architecture and the same drivetrain as the coupe, in a body with real back seats and a shorter production run.

It lacks the coupe's carbon roof and aluminium hood, so it is marginally heavier, and the steel roof gives it a slightly higher centre of gravity. In practice the difference is small and the added usability is large.

Because it never had the coupe's poster appeal, sedans have historically traded at a discount — which makes a well-kept, rod-bearing-serviced manual E90 one of the best-value modern M cars.

Year by year

  • 2008–2009

    Launch cars with the original bearing spec and the pre-LCI interior. iDrive is optional; many early cars are refreshingly simple inside.

  • 2010

    LCI updates to lights and interior electronics. Competition Package becomes available with lowered suspension, revised EDC tuning and 19-inch 359M wheels.

  • 2011 — final year

    Last sedans built. Best equipment availability and the most refined build; low-mileage manual examples are increasingly collectible.

The good and the bad

Positives

  • S65 rod bearings are the defining maintenance item
  • Throttle actuators fail and are expensive when they do
  • Fuel economy is poor and the engine is happiest being revved
  • Heavier than the E46 with more electronics to age
  • DCT cars have their own mechatronic and clutch costs

Known faults and what they cost

  • Rod bearing wear$3,000–$4,500

    The S65's known issue. BMW released revised bearings; the job should be done around 60–80k miles.

  • Throttle actuator failure$1,200–$2,500 per pair

    Triggers limp mode. Rebuild services are cheaper than new units and generally reliable.

  • Rod bolt and oil pump nutIncluded with bearing service

    Always replace rod bolts and secure the oil pump nut during the bearing job.

  • Cooling system and electric water pump$1,200–$1,800

    Electric water pumps are a wear item; failure risks overheating a very expensive engine.

Pre-purchase inspection checklist

  • 01Insist on rod bearing documentation, including which bearing shells were used
  • 02Scan for stored throttle actuator and VANOS codes even if no light is showing
  • 03Check electric water pump age and cooling system service history
  • 04On DCT cars, confirm fluid service intervals and check for clutch judder
  • 05Inspect the rear subframe and diff mounts — less problematic than E46 but not immune
  • 06Verify Competition Package equipment if claimed, and check EDC operation across modes

Modifications for longevity

  • Rod bearings

    Preventive replacement with updated shells and fresh rod bolts by 80k miles.

  • Electric water pump and thermostat

    Replace proactively around 70–90k miles or 8 years.

  • Throttle actuators

    Rebuild before failure if codes appear; keep the connectors clean and dry.

  • Oil service discipline

    5k mile intervals with the correct high-quality oil; the S65 is sensitive to neglect.

  • DCT fluid

    Every 40k miles on DCT cars; skipping it shortens mechatronic life.

Modifications for performance

  1. 01Tires and alignment

    Competition Package geometry and modern rubber transform turn-in.

  2. 02Exhaust and tune

    Headers and a tune yield 440–450 hp and a much better V8 noise.

  3. 03Individual throttle body tuning and cams

    Serious naturally aspirated builds reach 480 hp but cost real money.

  4. 04Supercharger

    550–650 hp kits exist; treat the rod bearing job, cooling and clutch as prerequisites.

What they are worth

Manual sedans with documented bearing work are the sweet spot and typically undercut equivalent coupes. High-mileage cars with unknown engine history are cheap for good reason.

Competition Package cars and rare colours carry a premium. As V8 M3s mature into collectibles, the sedans are following the coupes upward with a lag.
